New games with new people every third Thursday night at the Studio!
Did you know that the Urban Design Center proudly partners with Potions & Pixels to host a monthly board game night at our South End Studio? We have held six Third Thursday Board Game Nights with over a hundred people visiting the Studio this year. We hope you will join us for our last two game nights of 2023!
Why board games?
Potions & Pixels is a unique nonprofit that creates social impact through games, art, and technology, and a valued City of Charlotte technology partner. These collaborations include a city-building game for the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan, visual storytelling opportunities for the historic Brooklyn community through the KNOW CLT App, and workforce development programs in the Grier Heights community.
Smart Charlotte Manager Rachel Stark, formerly of the Urban Design Center, first partnered with Potions & Pixels for the Urban Arboretum Trail and multiple week-long experiences for local children interested in STEM topics. The students helped develop a virtual reality mobile game for the historic Elmwood Pinewood Cemetery. Visitors to the cemetery can now download an app, read historical facts about famous Charlotteans buried in the cemetery, and virtually see countless headstones in the potter’s field.
This creative reimagining of the built environment made Potions & Pixels a great partner to help the Urban Design Center advance our mission of educating the public on the importance of urban design. Activating our South End Studio space with Third Thursday Game Night propels innovative engagement and education forward in a fun, community-focused way. We playfully bring together people from all walks of life for an evening of imagination, conversation, and connection by offering board games for all ages and abilities.
What can you expect?
Have you always been curious about what we do at the Urban Design Center or wanted to stop by a Potions & Pixels event? Our events run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every third Thursday of the month and the Studio is located at 1507 Camden Road in the heart of South End. We are steps away from the Bland Street Light Rail Station and on-street parking can be found by consulting the South End parking map.
You can chat with staff, meet new people, and play board games in a casual environment. It has been a pleasure seeing families, new residents, and designers come together for a fun evening of community. Urban Design Center Studio events are always free. These connections help propel the Urban Design Center’s mission of advancing the quality of Charlotte’s built environment and bringing public awareness to the importance of urban design, one conversation at a time!
